- A Morning with Mary/am, the Mother of Jesus - Inter-Spiritual Retreat
Saturday, December 07, 2013
As we anticipate the beginning of Advent, we enter into a time of preparation, even “pregnancy,” with new hopes and plans for the year ahead. To enrich your Advent, we hope you will join us for an inter-spiritual retreat to expand your views of Mary and Maryam, the mother of Jesus, from two points of view: Christian and Muslim. We will gather with breakfast in the parlor at 8:30 a.m. and begin the retreat with New Testament scholar Dr. Ann Holmes Redding at 9:00 a.m. The morning will proceed with a series of brief meditations, interspersed with periods for silent prayer and meditation, ending with a time of sharing.
In both Christianity and Islam, Mary—or Maryam, as she is known in the Qur’an—exemplifies for believers our capacity to say, “yes” to God. As her story is told in the holy books of the two traditions, she is willing to tread a path of ridicule, misunderstanding, and even rejection by those around her for the sake of answering a divine call.
Dr. Ann Holmes Redding, whose spiritual identity is both Christian and Muslim, will reflect on the role of Mary in Christian and Islamic traditions and the spiritual gifts she may have to offer us all.
No matter your spiritual background or practice, your presence will be a welcome gift at this gathering. Please register with the church office 206. 325.6051 so we can plan for you. There is no cost.
